What it involves

Centre Revisions La Seu is an authorised driver assessment centre (Centre de Reconeixement de Conductors) for the psychophysical assessments required to obtain and renew Spanish recreational boating qualifications.

Once the assessment is complete, we issue the official certificate of psychophysical fitness (informe d'aptitud psicofísica) so that you can submit it to the authorities, your boating school or the relevant body, depending on the procedure you need to complete.

When do you need this medical?

The boating medical certificate confirms that you meet the psychophysical conditions needed to skipper a recreational vessel safely. It is the report you will be asked for at several points along the path of a qualification.

Obtaining a recreational boating licence or qualification for the first time.
Applying for the qualification card to be issued.
Renewing the card of a boating qualification.
Updating or extending certain sailing entitlements.
Proving your psychophysical fitness again when the authorities require it.

The assessment is the same for every recreational boating qualification. What changes is the procedure you have to complete afterwards, once you have the certificate in hand.

Which qualifications we issue the certificate for

The medical assessment is valid for the main Spanish recreational boating licences and qualifications, from the most basic to the highest ranking.

Licencia de Navegación

6 m · 2 miles · daytime

The most basic boating authorisation. It allows you to skipper recreational vessels and jet skis of up to 6 metres in length, during daylight hours and without going more than 2 nautical miles from a port, marina or place of shelter.

Patrón para Navegación Básica (PNB)

8 m · 5 miles

Basic skipper qualification. It allows you to skipper recreational vessels of up to 8 metres in length and to sail up to a maximum of 5 nautical miles from a port, marina or place of shelter. It also covers jet skis within those limits.

Patrón de Embarcaciones de Recreo (PER)

15 m · 12 miles

One of the most common qualifications. It allows you to skipper motor vessels of up to 15 metres in length and to sail up to 12 nautical miles from the coast, as well as between the islands of the Balearic and Canary archipelagos.

Patrón de Yate

24 m · 150 miles

A qualification above the PER, which you need to hold first. It allows you to skipper recreational motor vessels of up to 24 metres in length and to sail up to 150 nautical miles from the coast.

Capitán de Yate

24 m · no limit

The highest ranking recreational boating qualification, which requires you to hold the Patrón de Yate first. It allows you to skipper motor vessels of up to 24 metres in length with no geographical limits on navigation.

Complementary practical training can extend certain entitlements: for example, skippering longer vessels or sailing between mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.

Sailing is not a separate qualification. It is a complementary entitlement added to the corresponding qualification once you have completed the required sailing practice. So you can hold the PER, Patrón de Yate or Capitán de Yate with motor entitlements and add the sailing endorsement later on.

What does the check-up involve?

The assessment confirms that you have the physical and psychophysical aptitudes needed to skipper a recreational vessel safely. It is carried out in much the same way as for ordinary driving licences, taking into account the particular demands of being at sea.

Medical history and general health — Review of your medical history and general state of health.
Vision — Assessment of sight and visual acuity.
Colour vision — Assessment of colour perception, which matters for maritime signals.
Hearing — Assessment of hearing.
Musculoskeletal system — Assessment of mobility and of the musculoskeletal system.
Coordination and perceptual-motor skills — Examination of coordination and motor response.
Balance and neurological system — Assessment of balance and neurological condition.
Relevant conditions — Review of any cardiovascular, respiratory or metabolic conditions that could affect navigation.
Medical treatments — Assessment of treatments that could have a bearing on safety on board.
Overall assessment — Evaluation of the full set of conditions needed to skipper a vessel safely.

It is not an exam on navigation, maritime signals, charts or theory: it is purely a medical and psychophysical assessment. It does not include the multiple-choice psychometric test used in other procedures either.

If we identify anything during the assessment that needs further review, a medical report or additional documentation may be required.

What to bring

Valid DNI or NIE.
Valid passport, for people who hold neither a DNI nor an NIE.
Your current boating qualification or card, if this is a renewal and you have it to hand.
Medical reports on conditions, medical history or treatments that may be relevant to assessing your fitness.

You do not need to bring passport-style photographs: we take the photograph for the certificate at the centre.

How does it work?

  1. You book an appointment at the centre.
  2. We check your documents.
  3. We review your medical history and general state of health.
  4. We run the vision, hearing, motor and psychophysical tests required.
  5. We take the photograph.
  6. If the result is favourable, we issue the official certificate of psychophysical fitness.
  7. You submit the certificate to the authorities, your boating school or the relevant body in order to continue obtaining or renewing your qualification.

Validity of the qualification, and what falls outside the centre

The certificate of psychophysical fitness must be valid at the moment you submit your application for the card to be issued or renewed. With the certificate in hand, the procedure continues with your boating school or the relevant authority, depending on the case.

Validity and renewal

Recreational boating qualifications themselves do not expire.
The cards or supporting documents are renewed every 10 years as a general rule.
From the age of 70, renewal must take place every 5 years.
The authorities may set a shorter validity period, or certain restrictions, where the certificate of psychophysical fitness indicates it.
In Catalonia, renewals are generally processed by the same authority that issued the card.

What we do not do at the centre

Theory training and practical navigation training.
The theory exams for the qualifications.
The required practical training for the sailing endorsement.
Issuing and renewing the card or the qualification.

If your state of health changes significantly in a way that could affect safety at sea, a new medical assessment may be needed before the certificate expires.

At the centre we carry out and issue the certificate of psychophysical fitness. Training, exams, practical training and the issuing or renewal of the qualification are the responsibility of the boating schools and the competent authority. We do not provide boating training or issue qualifications at the centre.
