What it involves

At Centre Revisions La Seu we carry out the medical assessments required to certify that a person has the visual, hearing, physical and psychological condition needed to operate a crane safely.

Once the assessment is complete, we issue the corresponding medical certificate so that you can submit it to the Generalitat de Catalunya as part of the procedure to obtain or renew your professional accreditation.

When do you need this medical?

The medical certificate confirms that you meet the psychophysical conditions needed to handle and operate a crane safely. It is a requirement in several procedures relating to professional accreditation.

Obtaining the certificate of professional competence as a crane operator.
Obtaining accreditation as a tower crane operator.
Obtaining accreditation as a self-propelled mobile crane operator.
Renewing your professional accreditation when it expires.
Changing or extending category where applicable.
Proving your psychophysical fitness when the competent authority requires it.

At the centre we carry out the medical assessment and issue the certificate of fitness. Training, examinations and the issuing or renewal of the professional accreditation are handled by the Generalitat de Catalunya or the competent body.

Which types of crane we issue the certificate for

Each type of crane has its own professional accreditation. When you book, tell us which one you need.

Tower crane

fixed structure · site

A tower crane is a steel-structure crane commonly used on construction sites to lift and move loads. To operate one professionally you need the corresponding accreditation, which requires you to be of legal age, to have the necessary knowledge and to pass the medical examination.

Mobile crane · category A

up to 130 t

A self-propelled mobile crane is a lifting appliance mounted on a vehicle or mobile structure. Category A covers self-propelled mobile cranes with a nominal load of up to and including 130 tonnes.

Mobile crane · category B

over 130 t

Category B covers self-propelled mobile cranes with a nominal load of more than 130 tonnes. As with category A, obtaining the accreditation requires passing the medical assessment set out in the regulations.

A tower crane and a self-propelled mobile crane are not the same thing: the first is a fixed structure, usually erected on site, while the second is lifting machinery mounted on a vehicle or structure that can move. Each has its own professional accreditation, and the training, course length and specific requirements differ between the tower crane and categories A and B.

What does the check-up involve?

The assessment confirms that you have the capabilities needed to operate lifting machinery with precision and safety.

Medical history and general health — Review of your general state of health and medical history.
Visual acuity — Assessment of visual acuity.
Binocular vision and visual field — Assessment of binocular vision and visual field where necessary.
Hearing acuity — Assessment of hearing.
Balance — Evaluation of balance.
Sense of direction — Evaluation of spatial orientation.
Musculoskeletal system — Assessment of the musculoskeletal system and mobility.
Coordination and perceptual-motor skills — Examination of coordination and motor response.
Attention, concentration and reaction — Assessment of attention, concentration and reaction capacity.
Psychological assessment — Evaluation of your aptitude for work involving responsibility.
Conditions and treatments — Review of any illness or treatment that could affect the safe handling of the machinery.

National regulations expressly require a medical examination for both types of crane, and set out that it must assess visual and hearing acuity, sense of direction, balance and psychological aptitude. The assessment we carry out at the centre focuses particularly on those points, within a general medical evaluation.

What the psychometric test involves

The assessment may include psychometric tests covering the capabilities needed to work with heavy machinery and carry out precision manoeuvres. They evaluate aspects such as:

It is not an exam on how cranes work, on safety rules or on professional knowledge.

The theory and practical tests required to obtain the professional accreditation are separate from the medical assessment and are not carried out at our centre.

Stability and balance.
The psychological aptitudes needed to do the job safely.

What to bring

Valid DNI or NIE.
Your current professional certificate or card, if this is a renewal and you have it to hand.
Which accreditation you need: tower crane, or self-propelled mobile crane category A or category B.
Medical reports on illnesses, medical history or treatments that may be relevant to assessing your fitness.

You do not need to bring passport-style photographs: we take the photograph for the medical certificate at the centre. If you normally wear glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids, bring them: you can take the assessment with them.

How does it work?

  1. You book an appointment at the centre.
  2. We check your documents and which accreditation you need.
  3. We review your medical history and general state of health.
  4. We carry out the vision and hearing tests.
  5. We assess your balance and sense of direction.
  6. We run the coordination tests and the psychometric assessment.
  7. We take the photograph.
  8. If the result is favourable, we issue the medical certificate.
  9. You submit the certificate as part of the corresponding administrative procedure with the Generalitat de Catalunya.

After the centre: the procedure with the Generalitat

In Catalonia, the procedure to obtain or renew the professional accreditation is handled by the Generalitat de Catalunya, within the field of industrial safety. Once you have passed the official examination, you have 15 days from being notified of the pass to attach the medical certificate to your electronic file, in the Private Area of Canal Empresa, the Generalitat's business portal. If it is not submitted within that period, the authorities may close the file without issuing the accreditation.

Validity and renewal

Professional certificates and cards for tower cranes and self-propelled mobile cranes are valid for five years.
After that period they can be renewed for successive five-year terms.
Renewal requires you to prove once again that you meet the medical requirements.
Every renewal therefore requires a new medical assessment.

Other requirements for the accreditation

Being of legal age and holding the required academic qualification where applicable.
Completing a theory and practical course at an authorised body.
Passing the examination held by the Generalitat.
Proving your professional knowledge through a recognised qualification or certificate.
Holding a certification issued by an accredited body.
Submitting the administrative paperwork and paying the applicable fees.

Canal Empresa has separate procedures for applying to sit the examination, renewing the certificate and requesting a duplicate, so the exact way of submitting the paperwork may vary depending on whether it is a first application, a renewal, a duplicate or an accreditation obtained by another route.

At the centre we carry out the assessment and issue the medical certificate of fitness. Training, courses, professional examinations and the issuing or renewal of the accreditation are the responsibility of the Generalitat de Catalunya or of the competent bodies. We do not handle the accreditation procedure at the centre.
